The triquetra, also known as the trinity knot, is a three-sided, never-ending knot that symbolizes the three promises of a relationship; to love, to protect, and to honor. It is commonly seen on Claddaghs and other wedding designs. While it is most commonly associated with Ireland, this knot has a long history that spans cultures. Similar designs have been found in early Germanic coins and designs, in Japan this design is called Musubi Mitsugashiwa, and it is also commonly used in Christian artwork as a symbol of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
