The Little Dipper is not actually a constellation of its own, but composed of the seven brightest stars in the constellation Ursa Minor and is called an asterism. According to Greek mythology, one day while in the woods, Callisto (having been turned into a bear by the jealous Hera) spotted her son, Arcas. Fully grown, Arcas was an accomplished hunter and, not recognizing his mother, raised his spear to slay the bear. Zeus (to save Callisto and reunite her with her son) turned Arcas into a bear who then recognized his mother. Zeus honored both of them by placing them among the stars. He accomplished this by grabbing them by their short tails, twirling them around and flinging them into the sky, stretching out the tails.
